For better or worse, it looks like the US will leave Iraq next year. It's odd how the entire process seems to be planned around the 2006 midterm elections. Is it a coincidence or was it always the plan? Either way, this is a win-win for Bush. The anti-war people will be unable to accuse him of cutting and running for political expediency when that's what they're advocating.

I give credit to the spinsters: the argument that "we'll step down when the Iraqi's are ready to step up" is clever. They can cut and run at any time and declare: "Iraqis have shown a desire to fight for they're country. They've spent three years training, and they're ready to take on the challenges of democracy. Today is a proud day for freedom-loving Iraqis of every stripe."
